Before we begin
Herb & Hollow is a gardening blog about containers, herbs, balconies, houseplants and the kitchen apothecary. Like nearly every website, it relies on some information about its visitors to run, improve and pay for itself. This policy explains what that information is, where it goes and what control you have over it. By using herbandhollow.com, you accept the practices described below. If you would prefer not to, please discontinue use of the site.
Young visitors
Herb & Hollow is written for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 13 has shared information with Herb & Hollow, please contact [email protected], and we will remove it.
When you simply read
Even if you never fill in a form, a visit to Herb & Hollow generates some information automatically:
- your IP address and an approximate location derived from it
- browser type and version, operating system, device type and internet service provider
- the page or app that referred you, often Pinterest or a search engine
- the pages you view, the time you spend on them and the date and time of your visit
Some of this is recorded in server log files kept by our hosting provider for security and troubleshooting. The rest is collected through cookies and analytics tools, described below.
When you join the garden letter
If you request the Small-Space Garden Planner or subscribe to our emails, we collect your email address and, if you provide it, your first name. We use them to deliver the planner and to send occasional seasonal notes, new guides, planting reminders and offers for our own printables. Our emails may include small tracking images and tagged links that tell us whether a message was opened and which links were clicked.
Every email contains an unsubscribe link, and opting out takes effect promptly. In keeping with the CAN-SPAM Act, each message also includes our postal address. Subscriber details are stored with our email service and hosting providers, which process them only on our behalf.
When you write to us
Messages you send by email, including your name, email address, any photos of your plants and anything else you include, are used to reply to you and, with your permission, to shape future articles.
When you buy a printable
If you purchase a paid printable, our third-party payment processor collects your name, email address and payment details. Herb & Hollow receives confirmation of the order and your email address for delivery. We never receive or store your full card number.
Cookies and similar tools
Cookies are small text files placed in your browser that help a site recognize your device. Herb & Hollow and its partners use cookies, along with pixels, tags, scripts, local storage and web beacons, to measure readership, serve and measure advertising, attribute affiliate referrals and support basic functions.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The articles will still load, though some features may not work as intended. Where the law requires your consent for non-essential cookies, we will request it first and you may change your mind at any time.
Measuring readership with Google Analytics 4
We use Google Analytics 4 to learn which guides are read, how readers move through the site and which sources bring them. Google Analytics uses cookies and processes technical data about your visit, and Google states that GA4 does not log or store IP addresses. We view these results in aggregate and do not use them to identify individuals. Google's practices are described in its privacy policy, and you may opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
Advertising partners
Herb & Hollow is supported by display advertising. We may work, now or later, with third-party ad partners who serve ads on the site. These partners and their advertisers may use cookies, pixels and similar technologies to gather information about your visits here and on other websites, such as device details, pages viewed and interactions with ads, in order to show advertising suited to your interests and to measure its effectiveness.
We do not choose the specific ads shown, and their appearance does not mean we endorse the advertiser. You can opt out of interest-based advertising from many companies through the Digital Advertising Alliance, the Network Advertising Initiative and, in the EU and UK, Your Online Choices. You will still see ads, but they will not be personalized.
Affiliate links
Some of our links to seeds, tools, planters and grow lights are affiliate links, including links to Amazon through the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. Following one may cause the retailer to set a cookie that records the referral, and Herb & Hollow may earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. The retailer processes your order under its own policy, and the reports we receive show items purchased rather than who bought them. Our disclosure page has more.
The Pinterest Save button
Many readers save our guides to their garden boards, so our pages load Pinterest's Save button script. When a page with this script loads, Pinterest may collect technical information such as your IP address, browser details and the page address, and may set cookies, whether or not you click the button. If you are signed in to Pinterest, it may associate this information with your account. Pinterest explains its practices in the Pinterest Privacy Policy.
Embedded content
Guides may include embedded videos or other content from outside websites. That content behaves as if you had visited its source directly, and the source may collect data about you, use cookies and track your interaction with it.
Who we share information with
Herb & Hollow does not sell, rent or trade its email list. We share personal information only:
- with providers that host the site, send email, measure traffic, process payments or protect against abuse, under terms that limit their use of it
- with advertising and affiliate partners, as described above
- when required by law or legal process, or when needed to protect the rights, property or safety of Herb & Hollow, our readers or others
- with a new owner if Herb & Hollow is sold or merged, on the condition that this policy continues to govern the information transferred
How long we keep it
Subscriber information is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. Correspondence is kept while it is useful for replying and following up, then deleted periodically. Analytics data is retained for no more than 14 months, and server logs for a short period.
Safeguards
Herb & Hollow is served over HTTPS, access to our accounts is limited and protected, and we choose providers with established security practices. Even so, no method of storing or transmitting information is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your rights in Europe and the UK
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you
- ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data
- ask us to erase your data
- ask us to restrict processing
- object to processing, including for direct marketing
- receive your data in a portable, machine-readable form
- withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting earlier processing
- lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority
Herb & Hollow relies on consent for the email list and non-essential cookies, on legitimate interests for running and securing the site, and on contract for printable purchases. We respond to requests within one month.
Your rights in California and other U.S. states
California residents have the following rights under the CCPA, as amended by the CPRA:
- to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, and whether it is sold or shared
- to delete personal information collected from them
- to correct inaccurate personal information
- to opt out of the sale or sharing of their personal information
- to exercise these rights free from discrimination
Herb & Hollow does not sell personal information for money. However, the cookies placed by our advertising and analytics partners may count as a "sale" or "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law. You may opt out through the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link in our footer when it appears, or by emailing us with that request. We treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as an opt-out where our tools are able to detect it. We respond to verified requests within 45 days.
Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, Texas and other states with similar laws may make access, correction, deletion and opt-out requests in the same way.
Comments and social media
Herb & Hollow does not currently offer public comments. Anything you post about us on Pinterest or another social platform is handled under that platform's policies and may be publicly visible.
Links to other websites
Our guides link to seed companies, retailers, extension services and other sources. Their privacy practices are their own, and this policy does not apply to them.
When this policy changes
We may update this policy as our tools, partners or legal obligations change. The new version takes effect when it is posted here with a revised date. Continuing to use the site after an update means you accept it, so please look back from time to time.
